Mathematics

All Math Courses meet 29 Weeks (13 weeks in the Fall and 16 weeks in the Spring)

Junior High Math--Grades 6th-8th

Teacher: Mrs. Treadway

This 75 minute class will utilize Saxon's Math 8/7 textbook with homework each week. In this "flipped classroom," the tutor will provide an instructional video for each lesson each week. Videos will review lesson content and explain practice problems. Class time will answer questions about the material taught that week and reinforce concepts. Please note: The homework will be graded by the parent and corrected by the student prior to class time, while the tutor will grade assigned tests.

Parents must purchase the most current :

1) Textbook (2nd or 3rd edition is fine)

2) corresponding Solutions Manual

3) corresponding Tests and Worksheets Manual

4) 2 spiral notebooks

5) scientific calculator (~ $20) NOT GRAPHING CALCULATOR

6) ruler

7) protractor

Algebra I

Teacher: Terri Cofskey

This 60 minute class will utilize Saxon's Algebra 2 textbook with homework each week. Lessons will be completed through both in class and recorded video instruction posted on the website The class time on Wednesdays will be used to answer any questions over the material taught that week and to reinforce the material/tutoring time. The homework will be graded by the parent. Parents will need to purchase the most current textbook (2nd or 3rd edition is fine) and solutions manual.

High school level course providing a foundation in the basic concepts and skills of algebra, with special attention to signed numbers, positive and negative exponents, linear equations, and word problems.

Annual Tuition and Class Fee:   $375/$10

Fall 13 weeks--Spring 16 weeks

 

Algebra II

Teacher: Terri Cofskey

This 60 minute class will utilize Saxon's Algebra 2 textbook with homework each week. Lessons will be completed through both in class and recorded video instruction posted on the website. The class time on Wednesdays will be used to answer any questions over the material taught that week and to reinforce the material/tutoring time. The homework will be graded by the parent. Parents will need to purchase the most current textbook (2nd or 3rd edition is fine) and solutions manual.

Prerequisite: High school level course introducing middle-level skills in algebra with emphasis on systems of equations, quadratic equations, and systems of nonlinear equations. Covers area, volume, similar triangles, and introduces right triangle trigonometry. Word problems emphasize fundamental concepts and procedures.

Exploring Economics & Financial Literacy - Grades 9th-12th

Teacher:  Phil Hopper

Ohio graduation requirements now include 1/2 semester of Economics and Financial Literacy.  Exploring Economics is a one year course that provides one half-year of credit for high school. Students learn Biblical teachings about economics from the Old and New Testaments and a history of the U.S. economy. The curriculum emphasizes the contrast between command economies and free markets. Exploring Economics helps students understand both microeconomics and macroeconomics. The course explains economic terms from supply and demand to GDP and the Consumer Price Index, giving students tools to understand what they hear in the news and to make wise economic decisions.  We will end the year with a 4-6 week look at personal finance including budgeting, college expenses, mortgages and car loans, furnishing a home, and other aspects.

Since this is a one semester class being stretched out for the year, weekly homework will be lighter.  Please anticipate approximately 1-2 hours per week.

Students will need the following materials for the class:

  • Exploring Economics (lesson book)
  • Making Choices (a collection of supplemental primary sources and essays)
    • These items can be found here

Saxon Math 8/7                        

Teacher: Mrs. Cofskey

This one hour and fifteen minute class will utilize Saxon Math 8/7 textbook with homework each week, to be graded by the parent. Parents will need to purchase the 2nd or 3rd edition textbook and solutions manual.      

 

Algebra 1/2

Teacher: Dena Martinelli

This 75 minute class will utilize Saxon Math Algebra 1/2 textbook with homework each week, to be graded by the parent. Parents will need to purchase the 3rd EDITION textbook and solutions manual. 

This course focuses on introductory algebra topics. It will facilitate transition from the concrete concepts of arithmetic to the abstract concepts of algebra.

Geometry                                                                                           

Teacher: Mrs. Cofskey

This 90 minute class will utilize Jacob's Geometry textbook with homework each week. The homework will be graded by the parents. Parents will need to purchase 3rd edition textbook and solutions manual.

A discovery of learning how to “measure the earth.” Students will develop reasoning and problem solving skills as they study topics such as congruence and similarity, and apply properties of lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. Length, perimeter, area, circumference, surface area, and volume will be used to solve real-world problems. An Algebra I review is included.

Annual Tuition and Class Fee:   $375/$10

 

Advanced Math                            

Teacher:  Mrs. Cofskey

This 60 minute class will utilize Saxon's Advanced Math textbook with homework each week. The instructor will send out videos each week of the instructor teaching that week’s lessons which the students will watch prior to class time on Wednesdays. The class time on Wednesdays will be used to answer any questions over the material taught that week and to reinforce the material/tutoring time. The homework will be graded by the parents. Parents will need to purchase the 2nd edition textbook and solutions manual.

Prerequisite: Algebra II.  An in-depth coverage of trigonometry, logarithms, analytic geometry, and upper level algebraic concepts.

Business Math                                                                                       

Teacher:  Terri Cofskey

This course will cover the basic concepts, terminology, and math needed to operate a business as well as successfully managing family finances.  Concepts range from learning about small business, to larger business and basic skills of accounting such as accounts payable and receivable.  Parent will need to purchase the following items for this class:  A Beka's Business Math text, teacher book, solutions manual, and the student test and quiz booklet.

  • The Travels of a T-Shirt in a Global Economy by Peter Rivoli (uses the life-story of a single common product, the T-shirt, to explore the many facets of globalization)
  • Students will also need a computer/laption with camera and microphone

Financial Literacy - Grades 9th-12th             Spring ONLY-- 16 Weeks

Teacher:  Judy Young

Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool is a complete, high school curriculum designed for a dynamic learning experience. Teaching delivered via video by Dave Ramsey and his team of experts and a blended learning website, foundationsU.com, focus on providing 21st century personal finance knowledge and skills in a student-centered approach to learning.  This course will be primarily video driven with some application workshops. Parents will need to purchase the Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool Student Text.
